Westvleteren best beer in the world – again
The famed Westvleteren 12 Trappist ale from the Sint-Sixtus abbey in Westvleteren in West Flanders has again been rated among the top beers in the world by the website RateBeer. This year, breaking with tradition, the site declines to place the top 100 beers in order. However, Westvleteren 12 achieved an unbeatable score of 100 for its style and 100 overall. The same brewery’s Extra 8 also scored 100/100.
Ten Belgian beers made it into this year’s Top 100. They are: 3 Fonteinen Hommage from 3 Fonteinen in Beersel in Flemish Brabant; Bush Prestige from Dubuisson; Gouden Carolus Cuvée Van de Keizer from Het Anker in Mechelen; Rochefort 10 Trappist ale from Rochefort; Sint-Bernardus Abt 12 from Watou in West Flanders; and three beers by De Struise brewery in Oostvleteren, also in West Flanders: Black Albert, Pannepot and Pannepot Reserva.
The majority of beers on the list are from the US, reflecting the site’s readership, with mentions for Canada, England and Denmark.
RateBeer this week also named the cafe Kulminator in Antwerp (pictured) among the top beer cafes in the world, together with In de Verzekering tegen de Grote Dorst in Lennik in Flemish Brabant, ’t Brugs Beertje in Bruges, and the two Chez Moeder Lambic cafes in Brussels.
