Weapons arsenal found in dead terror suspect’s flat

11:56 28/03/2013

Belgian authorities searching the home of a terror suspect who was shot dead after a motorway pursuit found an arsenal of terrorist weapons at his flat in Anderlecht. Prosecutors confirmed the man was born in 1973 and came from Algeria, later joining the Foreign Legion, before moving to Belgium three years ago. He has been named as Hakim Benladghem. Police moved in after intelligence from French anti-terrorist officers triggered an investigation. Prosecution spokeswoman Wenke Roggen said: “The French police suspected him of being part of a network of criminals, whose purpose is to plan terrorist acts. At his home they found weapons, ammunition and military equipment.” Pictures released by the authorities reveal explosives, Kevlar clothing, long-distance and night-time visors, gas masks and equipment to make number plates, as well as militant flags and paraphernalia. Bomb disposal teams joined police in the search effort due to concerns that his apartment might also have a cache of explosives.
