Walloons are proud to be Belgian, study shows
Residents of Wallonia consider themselves in the first place Belgian, and are proud to be so, reports La Libre Belgique based on the Social Situation Index of Wallonia, a study conducted by IWEPS, the Walloon institute for statistics.
The study surveyed 1,400 Walloons and found that 81% feel Belgian and 90% are proud of it. About 52% of those surveyed also identify themselves as French-speaking Walloons, while only 15% consider themselves French-speaking only, and another 6% just Wallonian.
Nearly a quarter of the respondents are "very proud" to be from Wallonia, and nearly one in five are "rather proud".
The survey also reveals that while 40% of the Walloons are in favour of greater autonomy for Belgium's various regions, an overwhelming 93% are opposed to any division of the country.
