VUB launches robotics research group
The Free University of Brussels (VUB) has launched a research group focusing on the impact of robots on our lives.
The Brussels Human Robotic Research Center (BruBotics) is an initiative of eight research groups and more than 70 VUB researchers. They have joined forces to carry out interdisciplinary research on human-centred robot technology and the ways it can improve quality of life and society.
Robots can help us tackle social challenges, like the ageing of the population. BruBotics wants to be a European frontrunner in this domain by combining the expertise of research groups in life, computer and social sciences.
Current projects involve the use of exoskeletons for neurological rehabilitation and bionic prostheses that replace an amputated leg. BruBotics will be working closely with large companies, research institutes from around the globe, SMEs and non-profit organisations.
Among the guest speakers at the launch was Patrick Danau, general director of Audi Brussels, who explained that his factory already used more than 500 robots in its car assembly. Digital agenda minister Alexander De Croo was also present.
The group is funded by the Flemish Industrial Research Fund.
