USA Texas

Question

Hi to all Texans out there. I am travelling to Houston next April for a trip which will include Lafayette (LA), Houston, Austin, and San Antonio. Plan is 3 days Louisiana, 2 nights Austin or near, 2 nights San Antonio or near and 3 nights Houston ( has to be 3 nights in Houston because idea is to celebrate easter with family there.) Does anyone have recommendations for a true Texan experience near Austin or San Antonio and any recommendations for something to do en route from Lafayette (LA)to Austin? Will be traveling with kids under 10 years old so has to be good for kids. I have a guidebook for the usual suspects (Space centre, Alamo etc) but am looking for advice for somthing different from Texans. Cheers to everyone.

Things to see and do in Austin:

- Austin Bats /  Congress Avenue Bridge - Austin's Congress Avenue bridge is home to about 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats, the largest urban bat colony in N. America and possibly, in the world. The bats are generally active at dusk every evening between March and November and it is a very impressive sight to see the nightly flights.  Unlike anything else in the world, a definite must-see!

- State Capitol - the Texas Capitol is the largest state capitol in the United States and a National Historic Landmark.  Worth visiting.

- The Salt Lick - a BYOB, cash only, and the all-you-can-eat BBQ ranch that offers a unique Austin dining experience in beautiful hill country.

- Other notable Austin events include: South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival which takes place in March and Austin City Limits Festival which takes place in October.

Things to see and do in San Antonio:

- San Antonio River Walk

- The Alamo

- Fiesta - 10-day, city-wide, fun-filled, multi-cultural celebration which takes place every April.

- Sea World Amusement Park
