Urinating in the street twice as costly

12:35 14/08/2013

Brussels alderwoman for public cleanliness Karine Lalieux has announced that higher fines for urinating in the street and for fly-tipping had come into force last Wednesday. " I propose to highlight the policy against incivility by raising fines for antisocial acts that cause major damage: urinating in the street  illegal waste-dumping," says Lalieux. Fly-tipping will now be fined at the rate of €250 per cubic metre (instead of €100), while urinating in the street will be fined €100 instead of €50. "My department cannot carry on cleaning up people’s messes for ever, “ the alderwoman says. “People caught urinating in our streets, against our homes, buildings and monuments will now be punished most severely.” She added that more urinals and public toilets would be installed in Brussels. Fly-tipping, meanwhile, contributed to 2,500 tonnes of domestic waste being dumped on the capital’s streets.  "I refuse to believe that people who do this are unaware of the illegality of their actions," says Lalieux.

About time that those in power take this issue seriously - it's absolutely disgusting and something which men here seem to think is normal behaviour. I'd like to see them publicly shamed whenever they're caught - drenching them in old horse piss perhaps?

I hope this will also apply to cyclists who also do this in the cities, towns, villages and countryside (and in front of small children).
And also deter cyclists throwing their empty drinking bottles and cans on the roads and streets and in the countryside where agricultural crops are grown and where wildlife live. People should be responsible and respect where they live. Also make portable public toilets more available and affordable, available and open 24/7. If people do not have the money to pay the fine then they should server a community service - a few hours cleaning the street and the rubbish.

Quite right - about time! With apologies to all gentlemen who do NOT do this, I have yet to see a woman urinating on the street. That said, it does not mean it doesn't happen!
