U.K. customs and border control *insisted* on providing an address the last time I went there. I am now planning a trip via london (train to plane) where I probably will spend the day but not stay the night. Is this going to be possible?

There is no way to be absolutely certain but I would guess that, if you can produce a confimed booking on a flight leaving London later in the day that you are arriving, you would have no problem.
