Uccle commune welcomes two new ‘give' boxes

09:36 08/06/2018

Two “give boxes” are now open for business in the commune of Uccle.

Any resident can deposit items they no longer want, need or use in the two large, open cabinets.

The boxes can be found at the Le Phare library and the Longchamp pool. After Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, Etterbeek, Forest and Saint-Agathe-Berchem, Uccle is the fifth commune to install such give boxes in an attempt to promote recycling and to enable more reuse of goods. The give box in Saint-Agathe-Berchem has since been removed after multiple attempts by vandals to set it on fire.

Local lawmakers hope the give boxes will increase solidarity between residents. The idea for the give boxes in Uccle came from Thibaud Wyngaard, a lawmaker for the opposition party Ecolo.

According to a notice on the website of the commune of Uccle, donated items must be in good condition and can be picked up during the pool or library opening hours.

A number of items cannot be deposited in the give boxes – clothing, books, food and drugs. Dangerous and illegal items are also not allowed.
