Twitter to close Brussels office after two years

21:42 01/11/2016

Twitter is closing its office in Belgium, with the potential loss of five jobs, as part of a global cost-cutting exercise, according to Flemish daily De Morgen.

The social network's Brussels office is less than two years old and was mainly tasked with selling advertising to local firms.

The closure follows the news that other European offices for Twitter will close, including Germany and the Netherlands, De Morgen added.

Twitter plans to shed about 9% of its workforce, or 350 jobs, as part of an efficiency drive. The social network also recently announced it was closing its video service, Vine.

De Morgen says costs need to be cut as the business is still loss-making, with disappointing ad revenue and a series of unsuccessful takeover bids by the likes of Google, Salesforce and Disney.

In 2014, Twitter had about 1 million active Twitter users per month in Belgium, 40% of which are daily active users, making Belgium an important growth market at the time.
