Trip to NYC

I am traveling to NYC on 15-25 with my 10 year-old son (this is his birthday gift) and I am looking for a small cheap accomodation (like a room at someone's place). What we would like is not only to visit the city but also to meet nice people to exchange with. We are from France and living in Brussels.
