Traveling to italy

Hi - we are thinking of taking a few days off work at the end of August and go to Italy for a short break (we have never really been there). We will going there with a toddler, and I was wondering which Italian city would be convenient for a 3-4 day holiday with a two-year-old. Would Rome be too difficult? Where else could I go with a direct flight from Brussels, and have a short break before work piles up in September?
