please note that there is a difference between Venezia Mestre and Venezia Santa Lucia. You have to reach the latest one if you want to see the old town. They are separated by a bridge that connects the mainland. Mestre is in the mainland and definitely not worth a visit.

So I had a look online and you can get a bus from Treviso Airport to Treviso central station (ticket 1.20 eur if bought in the airport or 2.50 if bought in the bus / change might not be given). From there you take a train to Venezia Santa Lucia which takes around 30/40 minutes and the price is 2.85 Eur for 2nd class. And you are in Venice itself

The other alternative is to take a bus from Treviso Airport to Venezia Piazzale Roma (very close to the train station on the island) at a slightly more expensive price (cheaper if return is bought). see here:

I think you can fly to Treviso if you want to save some bucks, Flights to Venezia Marco Polo (the closest airport) are usually quite expensive.

Hotel is a difficult call as accomodations in Venice are very expensive. Try to see some cheaper options in B&Bs with the website www.airbnb.com

If this is your first trip to Venice, I would advise you most strongly to arrive there for the first time by water. The effect is magical, compared to the trip across the causeway from Mestre which is a real disappointment.

If you fly in to Marco Polo airport you can directly catch a waterbus to the city, more expensive but far far more attractive than the regulat bus via Mestre and the causeway. Or, you can catch ferries or waterbusus from other points on the mainland.

If you are staying in Mestre then of course you will use the causeway to commute into the city, but for that first arrival you should make the effort to arrive by sea. It may seem a roundabout way of doing it, but well worth the effort.
