Three Belgian directors at Karlovy Vary Film Festival

12:06 06/06/2013

There will be three Belgian directors featured at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which runs from June 28 until July 6, writes Cineuropa's Aurore Engelen.  Vincent Lannoo’s In the Name of the Son (pictured) will be in the running for the Independent Camera in the ‘Independents’ Forum’ competition, a category focusing on independent films from around the world. La Tendresse by Marion Hänsel will be presented in the ‘Another view’ category which features films with an unusual artistic approach. La Tendresse tells the story of a couple, played by Olivier Gourmet and Maryline Canto, who have been separated for fifteen years, and who are reunited during a two-day trip to see their son who is in hospital abroad after a serious skiing accident. As for Felix van Groeningen, he will be one of ‘Variety’s 10 European Directors to Watch’. These directors and their movies will be presented to both the public and industry professionals attending the festival. Geoffrey Enthoven was on the list last year with his film Come as You Are. Hans Van Nuffel (Oxygen) and Pieter Van Hees (Dirty Mind) also benefitted from being in the spotlight during previous editions of the festival and, last year, Michaël R. Roskam was also one of ‘Variety’s Directors to Watch’ at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Meanwhile, Paris Cinéma, which takes place from June 28 to July 9, will devote a large chunk of its programme to Belgian Cinema. The festival pays tribute to several Belgian directors, including Felix van Groeningen, whose short films will be screened, as well as his four feature films – Steve + Sky, With Friends Like These, The Misfortunates and The Broken Circle Breakdown, the American rights for the latter having recently been purchased by Tribeca Films.
