Third Level Options

Question

We are Irish and at the beginning of looking at options for third level with our son who has been at the European School for many years and will do BAC next year. Can I check with any other Irish here on the fee situation with Irish third level institutions as I am a bit out of touch. Will we quality for free fees in Ireland? I know there is a student contribution of around 3000 per year.

Secondly, since he is keen to study in English, can anyone offer any suggestions on English third level options in Europe (I have been looking at the Netherlands, but would welcome any personal experience advice, or if you know of other English language options in Germany, Belgium or elsewhere.

He is not yet sure of the study area.

You probably also want to consider Scottish Universities as well. For EU students tuition is free.

VUB has started doing some undergraduate degrees in English.
Scotland is an option, but there's a lot of demand and entry requirements are very high.
Netherlands is a great option for study in English.

Your son can apply through CAO for all the Irish Universities. Yes, he qualifies for free fees, so the cost will be 3000 euros student contribution. Accommodation in Dublin especially is difficult to find and expensive, but he will almost certainly get a place in the campus residences.

Scotland is good and free, but that will probably no longer be true come 29/3/2019. Maastricht is worth looking at.

There is a University Fair at EEB4 (Laeken) on 17 November. Your son should have received information on this from his school. English-speaking universities from across Europe will be there to present their programmes.
