Thiam wins second gold medal for Belgium

16:31 14/08/2016

Belgian heptathlete Nafissatou Thiam on Saturday delivered Belgium its second gold medal at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The 21-year-old Thiam was the overall victor in the women's heptathlon event with 6,810 points, an improvement on the Belgian record (6,508 points) and enough to beat out the UK's defending champion Jessica Ennis-Hill (6,775) and the Canadian Brianne Theisen-Eaton (6,653 points).

Thiam had a top day at the Games on Friday with a personal best record in the 100m hurdles (13.56). She then soared over 1m98 in the high jump, a new world record in the heptathlon.

It is Belgium's fourth medal at Rio2016, and its second gold. Thiam's accomplishment also marks Belgium's first athletics gold medal since Tia Hellebaut won the high jump at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
