Termination of work contract

Question

After nearly 9 years with one employer I now want to change jobs - and am wondering about my rights. In my Belgian working contract it says that the termination of work contract follows the Belgian labour law from July 3 1878. Would you be able to point out what that means (google search results in loads of pages of complicated legal texts...). My interest would be to free as soon as possible for my new job...

Thank you!

As you have been working for the same employer for over 5 years, a standard contract will require you to give 3 full calendar months notice . Give your notice on or before 31 July and you can leave on 31 October.
Your new employer - assuming that they know that you have been in post for 9 years - will know this and should have planned accordingly.
HOWEVER, what your contract states is always open to negotiation if you and your current employer can agree. You are perfectly free to ask whether you can leave earlier though your employer can refuse and insist that you work out your full notice. As an employer, I never wanted to keep someone who clearly wanted to move on; the risk of them not caring whether their work was properly completed was too great.
All you can do is ask.
Good luck.
