Terminating Rental Contract
I moved into a place in April this year, but due to an unexpected change in my circumstances I will be leaving Belgium at the end of this year, and will have to move out of the property after only 8 months.
The rental contract was for 3 years. Can someone give me advice on the following points:
- I know I need to give 3 months notice, but I'm assuming ill still have to pay 3 months rent as penalty for leaving before the 3 years are up?
- I also put 2 months security deposit down in a locked account. I assume this isn't linked to the notice period, just to the condition I leave the apartment in, so I would get that back providing I leave it in a good state.
- How do I go about giving official notice of moving out? Is an email good enough providing the landlady replies to confirm receipt of the email?
- I know that the landlady is currently living abroad for 6 months in the US, so I'm wondering how the moving out procedure (releasing the money in locked account, checking the condition of the apartment etc. will work if she is not here to see me face-to-face).
Thanks for any advice anyone can give
