Telecom providers to store traffic data

If approved, the law would require providers such as Belgacom and Telenet to keep track of residents' email messages and internet usage, according to reports today by newspapers De Standaard and Het Nieuwsblad. The intention is to give State Security access to valuable information that can be used in their investigation of, for example, criminal gangs. Currently, Belgian providers only provide State Security with data on phone and SMS conversations.
