Telecom providers to store traffic data

11:32 08/07/2013
The Belgian government has requested that parliament expedite the passing of a bill which would require telecom providers to store all information from electronic communications for one year.

If approved, the law would require providers such as Belgacom and Telenet to keep track of residents' email messages and internet usage, according to reports today by newspapers De Standaard and Het NieuwsbladThe intention is to give State Security access to valuable information that can be used in their investigation of, for example, criminal gangs. Currently, Belgian providers only provide State Security with data on phone and SMS conversations.
