Muziekpublique hoped to be able to organise live concerts with an audience again in April, but unfortunately the circumstances do not allow this. In order to support the music sector nevertheless and bring music to the audience, we came up with the following idea: the solo challenge. Until the end of April, we give artists the stage for 30-minute solo performances that you can watch via a live stream.

“In music we are trying to reverse what’s going on in the world. Maybe music will give the solution not to be enemies.” (Tarek)

Tarek Alsayed is a musician from Syria who has been living and working in Belgium since 2013 as a oud player and teacher of oriental music. Born in Syria in 1978, Tarek studied oud and music in the city of Aleppo and then taught in Aleppo’s music schools until 2013. Since 2016 he has been teaching at the music academy of Sint-Niklaas.

Tarek is a member of several ensembles and participates in numerous projects. In Syria he played with Nawa band (oriental and sufi music), Mayada Bselis group (modern oriental music), Dopamine band (Jazz) and Ramal band (oriental music). In France, he participated in the Oración project at the Fondation Royaumont. In Belgium, he played with Tamino, Violet, La Barracca (Exodus), Johan Petit (Bang & What Happens) and participated in projects such as Jiraan and Absence. He is also artistic director of the Wajd ensemble, an ensemble for oriental and sufi music, and is a member of Refa.
