Students protest against rise in higher education fees

12:46 21/10/2014

Education minister Hilde Crevits has announced the precise rises in the enrolment fees for higher education. The raise has been the subject of much debate, but the exact amount was not known until now.

For students without a scholarship, the enrolment will increase by almost €270, from €620 to €890. For those with a scholarship, the enrolment fee is €105, which is practically the same as now. For students in the category in between, the fee increases by €60, to €470.

Students in the middle category don’t get a scholarship because their family’s income is higher than the referential amount. If the family’s income is less than €1,500 higher than that referential income, they still didn’t have to pay the full fee. This limit of €1,500 has now been raised to €3,000, which means the number of students in the middle category will almost double from around 2,000 to 4,000. This social correction should help to prevent financial problems.

Bram Roelant, the president of the Flemish Association of Students (VVS), was far from impressed with the social corrections. “It’s not just that the enrolment fees have been raised but the budget cuts also affect the student services for financially vulnerable students,” he said to Radio 1. “The measures will decrease the accessibility of higher education.” Roelants said the student protest would continue and announced a new demonstration on November 5.

Rik Torfs, the rector of the University of Leuven, told deredactie.be: “The rise is not too bad, since they are compensated by the social corrections.” His colleague from the University of Antwerpen, Alain Verschoren, agreed but added that it was still too bad that budget cuts should be introduced at the expense of students. “The majority of students will have to pay the highest fee, which is unfortunate,” he said.

I think it is basic that the cost of advanced education is kept reasonable for students. On the off chance that we deregulate advanced education charges then we will definitely compound issues of value and access of all to higher education. Assignment Help

The education system must not rise the highest education fees because students can't afford such high prices for their studies. The government should take immediate action against this serious issue. That's why students don't take an interest in their academic studies and pay someone to write my essay UK and for an assignment for their academic education.
