Strong autumn for Charleroi's new Rive Gauche centre
Charleroi's new shopping centre, Rive Gauche, had a successful October and November, attracted 620,000 visitors each month, new figures reveal.
The Toussaint weekend saw a 50% increase in ordinary visitor numbers, with an average of 35,000 shoppers per day.
Rive Gauche director Thomas Cornil said research suggested the shopping centre was attracting a young audience, with 60% of visitors under the age of 40. Families accounted for a third of visitor numbers.
Four in 10 shoppers came to Rive Gauche by car, 20% by foot and the remaining 40% by public transport.
The shopping centre has launched a new smartphone app entitling users to 50% off parking. So far it has been downloaded 35,000 times.
Rive Gauche opened in March with 90 shops including Primark, Zara, Berscha, H&M, Kiabi and C&A, a four-star hotel, restaurants, apartments and underground parking.
