Strike looming for Brussels-City staff

12:10 05/05/2014

Unions representing staff of Brussels-City have plans to strike on May 8, in protest at the city’s new parking policy. The action concerns office staff as well as workers in the municipality’s various services.

The unions are angry at the new parking policy, which means an end to free parking cards for members of municipal staff, or a local alternative where applicable. They also complain that the managers of a variety of services have given insufficient support to members of staff.

The action will take place on Thursday morning, following a general meeting of the three unions concerned, and there will be a procession from Ruimingskaai, home to the department of roadworks, to the town hall (pictured) on the Grote Markt. At the same time, a picket line will be set up at Ruimingskaai.

I'm sorry, but HARDLY NO ONE in Brussels (least of all English speakers), other than ardent Flemish nationalists, call the Grand Place the Grote Markt.

And where exactly is the Ruimingskaai?

What is this nonsense? The EN speaking community is not taking sides in this the tiring linguistic fight.

The Bulletin Staff: If you have to put it in both languages, fine. But to do this now entirely in NL is just ridiculous.

Anyone else agree?

Er... Yes, I would tend to agree about the use of the more common French names for places in Brussels, rather than the Dutch ones, for sheer questions of orientation.
But what I find more striking in this piece of news is the fact that UNIONS agree to go on strike because PARKING PRIVILEGES that favour car drivers are AT LONG LAST being removed. This is 100% ridiculous and shameful. Employees who drive to work cost an awful lot more to their employer and to society as a whole than anyone using any other means of transport, and Unions AGREE that incredibly costly privileges like these should be kept ??
Scrap this subsidy and let drivers pay for their choice of transport instead !!
A parking space in a car park easily costs between 25,000 and 50,000 euro - that pays for an awful lot of bikes and public transport tickets !!

I have no sympathy for people who complain about paying for parking. These people have a job and how they get to/from work is their business. The state does not owe them a parking place. Join the real world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
