I have been looking into this myself recently. I have done a few trades on the FTSE through my bank account with ING. It's very easy but not exactly competitive. It's around 1% minimum 30€ each time you buy and sell and of course you have FOREX to deal with as well. For UK shares the cheapest way is definitely having a UK trading account. Hargreaves Lansdown will let you have a trading account and they are extremely competitive. No Forex swings either. But I am not sure what the tax implications are if you buy FTSE shares and hold them in the UK but live in Belgium. Either tax free or you get the annual UK capital gains allowance I guess! Of course if you trade moderately in Belgium it's tax free. For European trades then ING is a little more competitive and would probably be cheaper than using a UK based account.

The other thing to consider is that if you bought today through your Belgian bank then Forex is in your favour and you could make even more if you sold UK shares when the £ was stronger.

I have searched extensively to find a Belgian trading account that is as competitive as Hargreaves Lansdown and I can't find anything.

The general conclusion I have come to is that for shorter term, smaller gain deals on UK stocks you are better off having a UK account and for longer term, larger gains then using the ING is fine.

If you want to obtain a Hargreaves Lansdown account you have to email them and they will email you forms but you will have some ID paperwork to do.
