STIB to install cameras to detect trespassers in tunnels

11:50 18/05/2017

The Brussels public transport company STIB wants to install cameras to better protect tram and metro tunnels against intruders, announced Brussels regional mobility minister Pascal Smet at the Global Public Transport Summit in Montreal.

A public tender will soon be launched to equip the Brussels metro and tram tunnels with intelligent cameras, which are able to quickly detect when people or animals enter the tunnels. The company will first run tests with different manufacturers before deciding on a particular technology. Minister Smet and STIB director Brieuc de Meeûs have already researched various models of infrared cameras during the public transport summit this week in Canada.

STIB is also working on more ways to improve the safety of the tram tunnels, for example by placing ditches at the entranceways in order to prevent drivers from entering the tunnels by accident.
