Social Security Payments

Question

Hello,

I was registered as self employed in 2012. As of 7th January I started a full time employee contract. My accountant said that this was close enough to the start of the year to mean that I could switch my social security status. However this was not the case and I am left with paying the full social security amount for self employed workers for this first quarter of 2013. Has anyone been in a similar situation, and is there really no way round this?

Many thanks,
Rebecca

Just to clarify for me / for you: Did you clearly close / shut down your 'self employed business' due 31/12/2012 ?? Or is this still running as 'a side business' to your fulltime job?
Sorry, due to my (maybe limited) knowledge here, 'a switch' from self employed to fulltime employee is not possible. Your business has to be closed orderly and this is only possible by end of each quarter! So, if not yet done - move one ASAP today, as we have already 18th of the last month of this quarter. Good luck.

Hi there, sorry I didn't clarify before: I had hoped to switch from fully independent to independent 'complementaire' for this first quarter, so yes a 'side business'.

I'm trying to close down my business before the end of this month. My accountant has today turned around and said that I should do this myself, but I'm not entirely sure what needs to be done. He said an email will suffice but I'm not so sure... It's becoming a bit of a nightmare!

1) only by registered letter, this saves money and hassle ...never ever by email!

2) ask your Guichet d'Entreprises / your mutualite how to do!

3) sorry, change your accountant ASAP - he is presumbly part of the nightmare.

I've already asked about using the accountant for the company I am now working with and should be meeting with him this week. Only wish I had done it sooner.

Thanks so much for your help, I'll write a letter straight away.

I do have one additional question - if I pay the full amount for this first quarter as 'self employed', but have also paid as an employee, if there any way to get a rebate on the social security payments I've made?

Thanks again

don't know, ask your mutualité: they will know for sure.
Good luck ....and also to be safe at your side: safe some money for possible soc.sec and/or tax payments re to 2012 as everything will be recalculated after your cancellation.

Social security tends to catch up eventually, whether you've paid too much or too little.

I would ask advice from your local tax office and see what they have to suggest.
