Snake found in crate of fruit at organic store

21:57 22/10/2018

Staff at an organic food store in Saint-Gilles had a fright this weekend when they discovered a snake in their latest delivery.

Brussels firefighters were called out to capture the non-venomous reptile, which had made its way into a crate of fruit being stored in the shop's chiller room.

Fire brigade spokesman Walter Derieux said the snake was successfully caught and handed over to the Royal Belgian League for the Protection of Birds - which also looks after wild and exotic animals.

The creature - a European ratsnake - is common in Mediterranean countries including Italy, Greece, the Balkans and Turkey.
