Following a peak in fine particle pollution, which has raised a smog alert in Belgium, regional action plans will be activated today and Saturday with motorists required to moderate their speed on many roads and motorways.

The maximum speed will be reduced to 90 km/h on many sections: the E42 between the French border and Bois d'Haine; the Charleroi ring, the E19 from Nivelles to Brussels, the E40 between the Loncin and Herve interchanges, the E25 between the Cheratte and Coronmeuse interchanges, the A602 between the Loncin interchange and the Burenville interchange, and the E411 from Rosières to Brussels in particular.

In Brussels, some roads usually allowing traffic at 90 or 70 km/h will reduce the speed limit to 50 km/h. In the capital, the police have already announced that they will increase the number of checks.

During these two days of the smog alert, Brussels public transport and the Villo public bicycle service will be free.

In Flanders, the speed limit will be 90 km/h on motorways.
