Six injured in Antwerp knife attack

16:02 24/01/2026

Six people have been injured, including two in serious condition, in a knife attack in the centre of Antwerp targeting the city's Kurdish community.

The incident took place on Thursday evening near Operaplein during a pro-Kurdish demonstration and is now being investigated as an attempted murder.

The protest, organised by members of the Belgian Kurdish community in support of Kurds in northern Syria, had been peaceful before it ended.

Shortly after the rally began to disperse at around 19.20, attackers reportedly infiltrated the crowd and stabbed people standing on and around the square.

Emergency services responded quickly. All six victims were taken to hospital with stab wounds and other injuries.

Officers initially arrested four suspects at the scene, and released one believing he was not involved. The ages of the suspects are 17, 18 and 30.

Investigations are continuing, including forensic analysis and a review of surveillance footage. Authorities have stressed that the motive for the attack has not yet been determined.

Local Kurdish community representatives condemned the attack, with some describing it as a targeted act against their community.

Some follow-up events planned for the following day were cancelled out of respect for the victims and to maintain public order.

Witnesses reported chaotic scenes as people fled the area. Police urged residents to avoid the vicinity while inquiries continued.

Antwerp authorities said they were increasing patrols and support for affected communities as the investigation progresses.
