Sinkhole in Saint Josse repaired, street open to traffic

The sinkhole that opened up in the middle of Chaussée de Louvain in Saint Josse in September has finally been fully repaired. The street is now open to traffic again.

The 36-square-metre sinkhole on Louvain at Boulevard Clovis was caused by a water main bursting under the street, which wreaked havoc in the neighbourhood: More than 200 people had to be evacuated, and 25 children taken to alternative day care centres. The railway line running through Schuman Station became flooded with mud, cutting off rail traffic in both directions.

While people were able to return to their homes a few days later, the rail line – linking Brussels North station with the EU district and Ottignies, Namur and Luxembourg – took more than a week to repair. The rest of the damage was fully repaired this week.
