Sharp rise in respiratory infections as flu epidemic hits Belgium
Belgian health authorities have raised the national alert for respiratory infections to code orange, signalling a significant increase in cases this winter that is putting pressure on healthcare services.
The escalation comes amid the official start of the seasonal influenza epidemic in the country.
The Risk Management Group (RMG) announced the move from code yellow to code orange, reflecting heightened circulation of respiratory viruses including flu and other common diseases.
Under code orange, a higher level of concern exists due to sustained transmission and increased strain on medical facilities.
Officials recommend that people with symptoms such as fever, cough or a sore throat stay home, practice good hygiene and consider wearing masks when in crowded indoor spaces or in contact with vulnerable individuals.
Mask use is particularly advised for those over 18 in public transport, public events and healthcare settings.
The federal alert comes as the flu season has now been officially declared in Belgium, with laboratory surveillance showing that influenza virus activity has reached the threshold typically associated with an epidemic.
Healthcare providers report increased consultations for flu-like illness and heightened workload among general practitioners, while hospitals are seeing a rising number of admissions related to severe acute respiratory infections.
Vaccination remains a key recommendation, especially for vulnerable populations including older adults, people with chronic conditions and pregnant women.
