Seperating trash

Question

I have a question about separating trash. Is it necessary to put paper and cardboard into the yellow bags or can these items simply be tied up with some string? (I'm trying to cut down on buying plastic!). I hope someone can provide me with a helpful reply!

I've been putting paper in the cardboard boxes I use for groceries from Colruyt. Been doing this for years with no complaints. I see many neighbors doing the same or tying with string. Only thing though is that you can't leave it out the night before if it rains.
