Selling homemade bakes
Hello,
I would like to set up a stall on a weekly basis at three local markets in the Brussels area selling home bakes. Does anyone know what (if any) training certifications are needed? Are there any particular regulations which must be adhered to? Any idea where I can get more information on this matter?
Many thanks!
Hi,
Good luck.
You will need to get a market trader's card from Banque Carrefour des Entreprises (BCE) - if you have a VAT number, of course. If you don't have a VAT number, meaning you're not a professional, you can trade on some markets, but not all of them (professionals want to keep it for themselves)
If you sell food, you will also need to comply with AFSCA regulations: http://www.afsca.be/home-en/
Finally, a way to do a market is to go to a place very early (before 7) and ask for the "placeur" - the guy who's telling you where you can stand and how much it costs.
Give them a call.
Some markets are run by the commune so ask there too.
You are just about to discover the real problems with the Euro economies. By the time you have your papers and in a row and your fees paid out, you may have forgotton what you were trying to sell in the first place.
Best not to bake before the papers are in order, agreed.
However, we've always had a lot of fun doing markets so if you're not hoping to give up the day job, as it were, stick at it.
Cait, if you want to chat with us get in touch. We are experienced in these matters and are happy to help.

What do you suggest Mike? That she moves to a cash economy in Africa?
Millions of Europeans run businesses successfully here - I really don't understand your problem with such negativity towards people just trying to get on and earn a living from their passion.
I'm finding Macedonia to be incredibly welcoming to business ideas. :-)
Hi Cait,
I'm planning to do something similar, not on the markets but online. Did you progress with your plan? Thank you for letting me know
