In a first for the Brussels region, a total of 10 wooden sorting bins were installed in Josaphat Park in Schaerbeek on Wednesday, local authorities announced.

Made by local carpenters, the three types of bins at each ‘island’ – allowing for plastic (blue), glass (green) and general waste (grey) to be separated – are installed in addition to the existing number of 70 all-purpose bins scattered around the park. If the new bins are a success, the municipality will consider replacing the existing bins with the new ‘sorting’ variety.

The aim is to recycle 4.2 tonnes of plastic and 3.2 tonnes of glass over the next 12 months.

In a bid to avoid fires, the grey general waste bins have a special cigarette extinguishing plate attached where smokers can put their cigarettes out before disposing of them.

It was decided that, because paper products used in the park are often dirty, there would be no paper recycling bins installed. Signs indicate the waste that can be disposed of in the various existing rubbish bins which illustrate where each type of waste goes.

This communal project is being rolled out in collaboration with Brussels Environment and the waste management service Fost. In the medium term, the municipality aims to convert all parks in Schaerbeek to selective sorting.
