Schuman-Josaphat tunnel opens in Brussels
The new train tunnel Schuman-Josaphat officially opened today after nearly seven years of construction. The 1,250 metre-long rail line links the eastern edge of Brussels with the city centre. The new connection is important for improving mobility in and around the capital, writes Brusselnieuws.
The opening of the tunnel was initially scheduled for December, 2015, but the increased terror threat level pushed the project back by about four months.
The €245 million for the construction of the tunnel and an additional €135 million for the renovation of the hub were raised through investments from Infrabel, Beliris, Brussels Mobility and STIB.
The tunnel reduces the duration of a train ride from Brussels-Schuman to Brussels Airport to just 16 minutes.
