Safety in Schools

My child will start at a new school in Brussels soon and my question is whether schools do background checks on all employees here, routinely, as they would in the U.S.? For example I am concerned about auxiliary staff such as catering staff, bus drivers and assistants, etc. I intend to ask the school too, but just wondered if in general workers around children are subject to criminal background checks here.
