Ryanair gives green light to transatlantic flights
Ryanair is one step closer to adding several American cities to its list of destinations. CEO of the low-cost carrier, Michael O’Leary, has a plan ready for the company to offer service between several European and American cities, starting from as low as €14, write the Financial Times and De Tijd.
O'Leary’s dream is to offer cheap transatlantic flights within the next five years, from cities such as London, Berlin, Dublin and Cologne to New York, Boston, Chicago and Washington. Ryanair’s board of directors already approved O'Leary’s plan, and their next step is to invest in new aircraft.
The plan is very ambitious, writes De Tijd, which goes on to name other companies that have in the past attempted a similar initiative but were not successful, such as Skytrain and Zoom Airlines.
Norwegian Airlines is currently struggling to get the idea to take off. "We have a stronger brand than Norwegian," responds the marketing director of Ryanair in the Financial Times. "We have more flights, and a more efficient cost model."
