Reyers tunnel closures cause major traffic delays

10:23 28/05/2018

The renovation of the Reyers tunnels entered a new phase on Monday, prompting major traffic disruption on the E40 approach into Brussels.

Three of the six tunnels are now closed until January for repair works - Reyers-Montgomery in both directions and the Meiser tunnel towards the motorway. The Reyers to Meiser tunnel has reopened, but with only one lane.

There were major traffic jams on Monday morning, with one driver telling RTL it took him 45 minutes to travel 2km. Stib reported that the congestion around Meiser was having an impact on several bus routes.

The evening rush hour is also expected to be problematic. Motorists are advised to avoid the E40 where possible and use either the A12 via Laeken, Boulevard Leopold III or the E411 via Hermann-Debroux. Recommended diversion routes are displayed on roadside panels.
