Restaurants offering free meal on birthday

Not sure about shops but all brussels restaurants offer one free meal if you provide proof of DOB when settling the bill. Some will even throw in a bottle of wine or aperitif.

All? Really? Are your sure about that?

None of the places I worked in did, neither did I in my own place, perhaps if you have booked for a large party a cake might be provided but never heard of a free meal being indisciminately offered.

Been here 20 years and have never seen this anywhere.
There has been a time when reserving for 6 people for a 50th birthday celebration that when the bill came there was only 5 meals included in the total. That happened at the 3 Couleurs Restaurants that has since changed hands

I've seen this in Flanders but never for a single person.
Sometimes 2, but more commonly 4, guests eat and, if one of them has a birthday, they eat free. Also commonly within, say, a week of the big day.
