Resignation period according to the new rules

Question

Hi Everyone,
I have been working at my current job for about 2.5 years. I found a new job and need to start as soon as possible. I told my new employer that my resignation period was 6 weeks, but now I have been informed by my current employer that based on the new laws it is actually 8 weeks. Does anyone know if this is correct or how I can calculate it?

The notice period depends on several factors (type of contract, length of employment, salary level etc.). As thumb rule for white collar employee with less than five years work history with the employer the notice is 6 weeks. If you have been longer with your current employer, or if you are in (higher) management position the notice is from 3 months up.
However, companies themselves can also have an internal policy that could say 8 weeks.

New rules, IIRC only apply if you have a new contract and you signed it. If you have a contract from before the new rules, unless you've signed a new one, the old rules apply. Unless your contract states differently.

So read your contract. They can't impose anything new on you unless you signed up for it.
