Residing in Belgium and working in Switzerland

Question

Hi all,

I might be offered a job in Switzerland. I'm a permanent resident of Belgium (not a national), and I have a full time job here.

I was wondering whether it's possible to continue residing in Belgium and working in Switzerland.

How does it work in terms of taxes and so on?

I'd appreciate any feedback you might have on the subject.

Many thanks.

AFAIK you can leave Belgium within EU for upto 6 years and leave EU for upto a year and still 'maintain' residence in Belgium.

For these purposes I dont know if Switzerland is considered part of EU or not. From the face of it, looks like Switzerland is not part of EU but better to confirm with your cityhall and if possible please report back so as to help others be informed as well.

There are many factors to think about. Not just in Belgium but also in Switzerland

In Switzerland you would need to register at the local commune (a bit like here) and would get a permit, the Swiss have agreements with neighbouring countries but I'm not sure about Belgium. Cross border workers have to leave the country at least once a week.

it's worth checking with the HR department of the company you will be working for and even the local commune where you are planning on living

Here is a useful website for information for expats in Switzerland: www, englishforum.ch - make sure you use the search function first

Thank you both. I'll write back with news once I've figured this out.
