Relay for Life: Support the annual cancer charity fundraiser at St John’s school, Waterloo

Relay for LIfe - International Community & Waterloo
09:20 06/06/2023

This year’s Relay for Life, an annual fund raiser for cancer patients, will be held at St John's International School in Waterloo on 24 and 25 June.

The 24-hour event is organised by the international community and the town of Waterloo, under the umbrella of Foundation against Cancer.

Relay for Life is a festive and inspiring family gathering that brings communities together to show solidarity with cancer patients and raise awareness and critical funds for the fight against cancer.

The event spans 24 hours as a symbol that “cancer never sleeps.” For cancer patients, the fight does not stop because they are tired - so, for one night at least, relay participants do not stop either, say organisers.

How you can help

During Relay for Life, team members of all ages take turns walking or running around a track for 24 hours. It is not a race but an invitation to go beyond one's limit to support those affected by the disease. During the 24 hours, participants and visitors enjoy live entertainment, wellness and sports activities such as Zumba, stretching or salsa.

Kids can enjoy games and other arts and crafts activities while food and refreshments are on offer throughout.

Whether you stay 24 hours or drop by for a show, a ceremony or a drink, everyone is welcome to participate in their own way and at their own pace.

For anyone wanting to support the charity, a contribution of €40 or more is tax deductible.

Raising money for cancer research

All funds raised go directly to the Belgian Foundation against Cancer, which aims to advance the fight against cancer. It finances scientific research programmes throughout Belgium and encourages healthy lifestyles, cancer prevention and screening. The foundation also funds psychosocial projects that aim to improve the quality of life of cancer patients and their families.

A spokesperson said : “None of this would be possible without solidarity and the sense that, together, we can beat cancer.”

Support for cancer patients

If you have battled cancer or are currently undergoing treatment, you are the guest of honour of the Relay for Life event and can join other survivors in the VIP lounge, where food and drinks are available.

In addition, the organisers have prepared a pampering programme for cancer patients, including massages, acupressure, esthetical care and a crystal bowl bath.

The event is held under the patronage of Jesper Fredberg, CEO of Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht.
