Red Cross issues urgent appeal for blood donors

09:30 29/07/2014

The Flemish branch of the Red Cross has issued an urgent appeal for blood donors during the holiday months, in particular those with blood groups A and O, both positive and negative.

The summer months are typically a period when blood donations decrease, which, together with low blood stocks at the moment, gave rise to the appeal. The two blood groups have been in demand recently from hospitals, the Red Cross said, although donors of all types are always welcome.

The Red Cross manages all blood donations and stocks in Flanders. The organisation said it has sufficient stocks at the moment to cope with hospital demand, but more donations would make the supply more secure.

Potential donors can call the free number 0800 77700 to find out where and when to give blood, or fill in a form online. New donors must be between 18 and 66 years old.
