Record sum paid for original Tintin drawing

11:37 10/12/2013
A buyer has paid a record €243,492 for an original page drawn by Hergé for the Tintin album King Ottokar’s Sceptre at a sale organised simultaneously in Brussels and Paris. The page is by Hergé’s own hand, in Indian ink, gouache and watercolour on paper.

Another work by the artist, whose real name Georges Rémi, also fetched six figures: a series of six panels in Indian ink from the Tintin album Prisoners of the Sun was sold at the same sale, organised by Millon, for €114,948.

The sale was dedicated to original works by strip artists, including Franquin and Willy Vandersteen, with 45 of the 50 on offer changing hands for a total of €1.125 million.

The price of €243,492 is only a record for a page panel; in 2012, the original illustration of the cover of Tintin in America sold for €1.34 million.
