Record number of people in Brussels cycling for daily commute

13:31

A growing number of people in the Brussels Capital-Region are choosing bicycles as their main way to get to work, according to data from Acerta's mobility barometer.

The figures showed significantly more trips by bike than in previous years with a record number of commuters cycling in 2025. One fifth travelled to work by bike in Brussels last year, an increase of more than 40%.

This trend reflects stronger interest in active transport, driven by health concerns, environmental awareness and improvements to cycling infrastructure.

Both local authorities and cycling groups say the rise in bike commuting is linked to expanded cycle lanes and safer routes, particularly in central neighbourhoods. More employers are also providing facilities such as secure bike parking, encouraging staff to leave cars at home and bring their bikes.

Cyclists now represent a larger portion of morning and evening commuter traffic; this shift is most pronounced among residents living within five to 10km of the Brussels centre.

The increase comes as the region continues to invest in urban mobility plans that prioritise sustainable travel. Authorities have highlighted the benefits of cycling for reducing congestion, lowering pollution, bettering air quality and improving overall public health.

Despite the strong growth, cycling advocates say additional measures are needed to further boost safety, including more protected lanes and increased maintenance during winter months. Many say that meeting these needs would help make Brussels one of Europe’s leading cycling cities.
