Record number of lottery tickets sold last year

16:18 12/01/2018

There were more winners in the national lottery last year than any year before. Among them were 40 winners who became millionaires.

The lottery paid out €886 million in total last year in response to 69 million winning tickets. It’s not necessarily that Belgians are getting luckier; the lottery is simply becoming more popular.

It is estimated that some 6.5 million people played the lottery in some form or another, including Lotto, EuroMillions or scratch cards. National Lottery’s turnover was €1.3 billion, also a record.

This is mostly the result of an increasing popularity in Lotto and EuroMillions, a spokesperson said. Last year saw sales increase by €70 million for those products on the year before.

Proceeds from lottery sales also help fill the federal coffers – €1 out of every €4 spent goes to the federal government. Another €182 million went to charitable organisations.
