Problems with Base

Question

I had ordered an internet connection from Base, but they didn't get the connection working at all, their helpline didn't help ("it should be working normally") and after a few months I sent them a recommended letter and stopped paying the bills since there was no service. Now they claim that I still owe them for all those months with no connection, totally ignoring my calls and letter, and use another company to collect the money - threatening to pay a visit at home if I don't pay within five days.
Is this legal, even in Belgium? I have faxed the company on the number on the letter, but they have ignored it and they won't pick up the phone either. I know other friends have had similar problems with Base before, but they were solved by a lawyer. Can someone recommend a lawyer for this type of problem?

Stay away from BASE fixed Internet line!
I am an expat and have had a dreadful experience with BASE fixed Internet in Brussels. The BASE Internet was most unreliable, often being down. I paid 40 € per month for a fast Internet line but discovered that BASE only gave me the slow speed which costs 30 € per month the periods Internet worked. On 20 July I lost my BASE Internet for ever. After 2 reminders for repair I cancelled my BASE contract in writing on 28 July since nothing happened. I asked BASE, in writing, to terminate my contract from September when my 1 year binding period expired. However, Mr. Van Calck Vincent at the QAT Team in BASE has in writing stated that according to the BASE sales condition I still have to pay for Internet until November, being for 3 months after the cancellation of my contract and for 3 ½ months with no signal from BASE at all. Furthermore, Mr. Van Calck Vincent states: ‘We are not responsible for the situation’. So I wonder: Who is responsible? And is it correct with 3 months cancellation period when I have no binding period anymore? I warn others: Stay away from BASE! I have now changed to Belgacom, which gives me a cheaper, faster and more reliable Internet combined with TV-signals. Len – former BASE customer BECON996672492.
