Prime minister’s private inbox hacked

11:52 31/05/2013

Prime minister Elio Di Rupo’s inbox, as well as those of several members of his entourage, was the victim of hackers, it emerges from the analysis of a CD-ROM sent anonymously to De Morgen, containing hundreds of emails. These messages on the disc are all from a private Belgacom mailbox used by Di Rupo. All emails date from 2004-2008, when he was president of the French-speaking socialist party and also minister-president of the Walloon Region (2005 to 2007). Almost all emails are of a private nature, although some concern his political activities. "This constitutes theft of private data, “ the prime minister said. “I have no idea who is responsible".  He hasn’t yet indicated whether he would lodge an official complaint. Another six email addresses were also hacked, including the socialist party’s general inbox and the address of an acquaintance of Di Rupo’s who works for the National Bank of Belgium.
