Pre-agreement reached between Swissport management and unions

21:36 22/08/2017

The management and trade unions of baggage handler Swissport have reached a preliminary agreement after a wildcat strike broke out on Tuesday morning, says the liberal union (ACLVB). The agreement still needs to be submitted to Swissport staff, but in the meantime Brussels Airport anticipates ongoing delays into tomorrow. Travellers are advised to carry hand luggage only.

The Swissport workers at Brussels Airport are currently voting on the pre-agreement reached by unions and management. If the employees approve, they can still resume work on Tuesday night.

"The pre-agreement states that the 60 staff members who currently have a part-time contract will be deployed full-time until the end of September,” explains Sandra Langenus of the socialist trade union ABVV-BTB. “There is also mention of a bonus of up to €500, as a reward for all the hard work these summer months.”

The strike's impact is huge, as Swissport serves 60% of Brussels Airport flights. Most flights are delayed, while others departed without luggage.
