Pork and wine in STIB’s chicken sandwiches
Traces of pork were found in chicken and tuna sandwiches sold at the canteen of Brussels public transport company STIB, La Dernière Heure reports. The tests were initially conducted on the sandwiches – made by industrial caterer Aramark – to detect the presence of horsemeat. Pork was found in the form of gelatine and protein contained in the sauce. Wine was also found in one of the chicken-based fillings. Some STIB workers of Jewish and Muslim faiths have called it an “affront” to their religious freedoms. The sandwiches have been removed from sale. It was also announced this morning that STIB was considering serving halal food in its canteens. The dishes wouldn’t replace existing menu items but would be offered as an alternative. The issue is to be debated tomorrow during the company’s catering committee meeting.
