Plans to marry and children from previous relationship

Question

Hi all,
Please do not be judgemental......
Planning to marry and whilst arranging the pre-nup it became apparent that if my ex has financial issues that involves the kids and does not pay, it comes to me (thats normal, not just the law).
If however I cannot pay, IT will fall to my future wife.........
I cannot believe that there is such a law like this - my kids - my ex and my responsibility !
Anyone heard of such ?
I intend to see a family lawyer but there must be a way that a clause can be made or reach a settlement firsdt with my ex then proceed to marry my future Wife.
TIA

J

You need to seek legal advice from a notaire to get a marriage contract drawn up. You should also discuss wills at the same time. This is where you will get legal advice and answers to your questions.

You're not making a deal with your ex, you're supporting your children. These are two very distinct legal issues.

You can't avoid supporting your children, and anyone marrying you also takes on that liability.

That is my understanding of Belgian law too, and I presume that is what your notaire told you.

Seemingly you are keener to financially support the legal profession than your own children. If you think that what your own notaire told you was wrong, ask another one, their advice is free, but I suspect that you will get the same answer.

A notaire IS legal advice, it s a specialised lawyer.

Your tone is not good. Your priorities are wrong.
